The Michigan Municipal League (MML) is asking folks to sign a petition of support for Complete Streets on their Let’s Save Michigan website. They recently featured the Complete Streets design principle at their Capitol Conference, and brought national walkability expert Dan Burden to a number of Michigan communities in February.
We are extremely pleased to see that the Let’s Save Michigan blog is asking people to contact their legislators to support HB 6151 & 6152. While MML has been supportive of the idea of Complete Streets, they have not officially thrown their support behind these specific bills. MML’s testimony last week before the House Transportation Committee stated that they only support these bills “in concept.”
We expect the House Transportation Committee to vote on these bills this Thursday, June 17. We’ll keep you updated.

Having just heard from my State Representative on bills 6164 and 6165 that take control of local speed limits away from municipalities, it became evident that our legislators need to be educated on the subject of Complete Streets. Setting local speed limits by the State Police based on the 85th percentile of how fast vehicles are moving, and perhaps the number of curb cuts, completely ignores the fact that there may actually be pedestrians in the same area. Young, old, families, bicycles and strollers are probably all using the same routes, crossing at cross walks or anywhere they can if crosswlks are not present, and yet some legislators feel this can somehow be ignored when setting speed limits and determining safety. Keep up the good work. It is about time we learn that how fast you can drive between point A and B may not be the best solution for Michigan’s problems and there are better solutions than just posting higher speed limits.
